Plant-based foods provide all the nutrients and vitamins the Brokpa need to live healthy, active lives at 15,000 feet. The tribe’s staple food is barley, which they harvest on steep mountainsides. In addition to barley, a traditional Brokpa meal might include roti baked in an earthen oven, lettuce leaves, roasted potato, spring onion, boiled cauliflower and wild mint. Almond, apricot and walnut are other essential foods, as well as large amounts of black tea fortified with barley flour. Fuell

A handful of organizations and journalists have exposed the widespread use of child labor and slavery, on cocoa farms in Western Africa, causing the industry to become increasingly secretive, making it difficult for reporters to not only access farms where human rights violations still occur, but to then disseminate this information to the public. Eating red and processed meats on a daily basis has been linked to rising mortality rates. Excess consumption of red meat may increase the risk of heart disease, chronic inflammation, kidney disease, appendicitis, certain cancers and other disorders. One of the largest studies of vegetarian and vegans found that people on plant-based diets have a significantly longer life expectancy by nearly eight years. The same difference was noticed among smokers and non-smokers. In a similar 2014 study from

That’s right, folks. On May 19, 2016, Kuntal Joisher, a dedicated vegan, successfully climbed the summit of Mount Everest. But where’s that story? Why is no one reporting on that? Perhaps it’s because as a society, we have grown defensive against the vegan diet. Despite the fact that reports and studies come out every week detailing the negative health and environmental impacts of meat consumption, we do not want to accept that we may need to tone down our obsession with meat. That is, if

The problem being that we are all members of the human race, and thus partially directly, or indirectly responsible for the widespread destruction of the environment and the planet that has been largely caused by our own species. The single, most significant step any of us can take to lessen our burden on this planet, and thus step away from the problem, is undoubtedly to become vegan; to cease support of the tyranny and callous disregard for the lives of literall

Fructose, a simple sugar found in fruit, is preferentially metabolized to fat in your liver, and eating large amounts has been linked to negative metabolic and endocrine effects. So eating very large amounts – or worse, nothing but fruit – can logically increase your risk of a number of health conditions, from insulin and leptin resistance to cancer.

Accusing parents of forcing their beliefs on children doesn’t make much sense to me, because all parents – vegan or not – will use their beliefs as guidance to raise their children. That is kind of a normal process. But, in case of veganism, we are not using our beliefs. We’re using our knowledge. These are two very different things and this knowledge is so valuable for them, that it would be very stupid for us not to use it.

Abolitionist veganism, as developed by Gary Francione, is based on the simple idea that all animals, human and nonhuman, matter morally. We stop our cars in front of dogs, raccoons, and deer because we recognize that these animals do matter. They matter first in the sense that their own lives mean something to them, and this “meaning to them” produces the recognition in us that their lives also mean something for us. We intuitively grasp that how we behave towards animals does matter, it doe
